Leesburg, VA (June 26, 2024) – The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has issued a drought warning advisory for the Northern Virginia and Shenandoah regions.

While there are currently no voluntary or mandatory water restrictions, residents and business owners are reminded to use water wisely. Below are a few water-wise tips to follow:

• Check for leaks in faucets, toilets, hoses, etc. and repair promptly
• Keep outdoor watering to a minimum. Avoid over irrigating grass, it’s normal for grass to go dormant in hot, dry weather
• Turn off the water when brushing your teeth and shaving
• Use the washing machine and dishwasher only when full
• Take a shorter shower or fill the tub with less water

Should the situation get worse, voluntary and/or mandatory water use restrictions could be put in place. The Town’s Department of Utilities is working closely with the regional utility partners and government agencies to monitor the conditions and respond according to the Potomac River drought response plan.

The Potomac River is Leesburg’s water source and while lower than normal, is not at a declared drought stage per the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB).

Updates will be provided to the Town’s website and social media, as necessary. You may also stay informed by signing up to receive free text alerts from Alert Loudoun.
